The Creation of Humans
Imagine being formed out of clay, pulled out of the water, and plopped onto the land. Maybe not the most comfortable way to be created, but this is the way people thought they were made in Mesopotamia. In the beginning of time there were only gods and goddesses. Each god had a certain job to do on Earth. The gods were not happy with how hard they had to work so they asked the wise water god Ea what to do. Ea told them that they should create creatures so their work would be lowered. So Enki grabbed the clay out of the lake and formed them into humans. Then he breathed life into the clay figures, but he would not let them live forever. Only the gods and goddesses would live forever. The humans were then put to work to serve the gods and provide them with foods and drinks. The humans took water from the rivers and planted crops. The gods were very pleased with themselves. |
