The Jobs of the High Class
The King
The King was the ruler of a City-State of Ancient Mesopotamia. The King had many jobs. He led the City-State’s army. He made rules and decided what shall be taxed. The King payed taxes like a normal person. The city-states were often at war with each other. A famous leader of Babylon was Hammurabi. He had his scribe write Hammurabi’s Code which was a law pillar. The king had to make laws that even though everyone thinks the King didn’t have to completely obey the laws because he was royalty is false. Kings could afford fancy jewelry and didn’t have much free time.
Priests
Priests were the religious leaders of Mesopotamia. They were treated with about the same amount of respect as the king. They also still had to follow all the laws with no “Because I’m a Priest” exceptions. They could afford fancy jewelry and had little free time.
Scribes
Scribes were the only people in Mesopotamia that could write in cuneiform. They inscribed things in tablets. Normal people didn’t just go write a letter. They had a scribe do it for them. Government officials, kings, and priests sometimes had their own scribe who wasn’t a slave, but they hired the scribe. Scribes were almost always busy and had almost no free time.
Government Officials
Government officials were senators, tax collectors, generals, and just about every person who worked for the government. They could afford fancy jewelry and slaves. They spent almost all of their time working and had almost no free time.
